Egg-citing Engineering

ASCE TMB and UNR Students Inspire Future STEM Stars

The College of Engineering at the University of Nevada, Reno's ASCE Student Chapter, ASCE Truckee Meadows Branch, and ASCE Younger Member Forum are proud to continue our annual Engineering Field Trip tradition for Agnes Risley Elementary School's 4th grade students! Now in its fourth year, students once again tested their egg drop devices, built gum drop and toothpick towers, challenged them on a small shake table, toured the big shake table at Harry Reid Engineering Laboratory. The kids had an absolute blast learning firsthand how fun engineering can be. We have no doubt this group is full of future engineers! A huge thank you to all our student volunteers for making this another unforgettable day, and we can't wait to do it all again next year!

STEM in Action

Agnes Risley’s 4th Graders
Build and Test Structure Stability

Our ASCE TMB partnered with Agnes Risley Elementary School for a STEAM event that brought 4th grade students together for a hands-on engineering challenge focused on creativity, teamwork, and problem-solving. Working in small groups, students “purchased” building materials using multiplication skills and designed their own structures. They then tested their creations by measuring height, evaluating strength with a load test, and participating in a simulated earthquake “shake table” to see how well their designs held up under increasing levels of intensity. With support from volunteers from the Young Members Forum, the activity provided an engaging way for students to apply math and engineering concepts in a fun, real-world context.

Monica Morales was featured on Cities of the Future

A special screening at the Legends Galaxy Theater in Sparks was made possible for over 300 Washoe County School Students. They experienced the magic of this film in 3D on an unforgettable field trip, organized by one of our own, who shared her first-generation college journey from hometown schools to engineering success!

Special thanks to volunteers for making the day even more special with red-carpet photos and an engaging panel discussion on the future of Reno and Sparks. With support from Jacobs, ASCE, and Nevada Water Environment Association, alongside enthusiastic participation from schools like the Academy of Arts, Careers, and Technology, Wooster High School, Mendive Middle School, and Agnes Risley Elementary School, this day of STEAM outreach will forever be cherished.
