The project was constructed to capture and convey stormwater in a collection system to reduce non point source pollution to the Truckee Meadows Water Authority’s Highland Canal and Chalk Bluff treatment plant. This project was a high priority project with value aimed at providing significant drainage improvements and stormwater protection. Prior to construction, stormwater flowed off of land and roadways in unimproved dirt ditches directly to Highland Canal, a feed to the Chalk Bluff Treatment plant which is a community source of domestic and high quality drinking water. The constructed system collects stormwater such that it does not travel across unsuitable properties, and stormwater is now discharged to an energy dissipation system. This allows for mechanical removals of sediments and associated nutrients such that a majority of these are not discharged to the Truckee River.
